CHIRPS SAT - 4.8km - Daily¶

Example 1-month Precipitation Map
Description¶
The Climate Hazards Center Infrared Precipitation with Stations version 3 (CHIRPS v3) is a 40+ year quasi-global rainfall data set. Spanning 60S-60N (and all longitudes) and ranging from 1981 to near-present, CHIRPS v3 incorporates an updated in-house climatology, CHPclim2, satellite-based thermal infrared rainfall estimates, and in-situ station data to create gridded rainfall time series over land. CHIRPS is fundamentally a pentad and monthly product, and all other time steps are derived from those. The satellite-based daily product (CHIRPS v3 daily 'sat') uses daily precipitation from the NASA IMERG Late V07 product (0.1 deg resolution) to partition pentadal CHIRPS v3 totals into daily amounts. Daily IMERG values are converted to ratios of the corresponding IMERG pentad total, and these ratios are multiplied by the CHIRPS v3 pentad total to produce daily estimates. When the IMERG pentad total is zero and the CHIRPS v3 total is not, the CHIRPS v3 total is divided evenly among the days. IMERG data begin in 1998. IMERG is available within the 2-day lag used for preliminary CHIRPS v3, and preliminary daily CHIRPS v3 is currently produced only with IMERG data. CHIRPS v3 is produced by the Climate Hazards Center at the University of California Santa Barbara.
